On December 21, 2012, we will change the meaning of apocalypse.
December 21, 2012 is the Mayan calendar's end - and some believe the world's end as well. It is a symptom of a larger problem. It seems that Americans have a strong fantasy about the end of the world and dwell on it at any chance they can. And while the world is in dire need of a change, the fantasy of apocalypse seems to immobilize action rather than inspire. By continually replaying the end of humanity in television, film, and politics, we have estranged ourselves from that which makes us human: mortality. Endings.
In response to this, we will perform Quatuor pour la fin du temps to present a different kind of understanding of apocalypse. One inspired by religious faith, but unique in its ability to balance hope and trauma, failure and progress.
Originating in Buffalo, NY, this website is to connect all musicians who wish to work together and perform this magnificent piece. By performing the piece on December 21, we reclaim the right to have emotional and political action in the face of pending crisis and apocalypse. Most of us have tested our limits or had them tested - it was almost the end of our world at some point - and we have survived thusfar. What happens when it is an entire society? All of humanity?
